Streamline Solutions launches ELEMENTS v2.3.0

ENGYS is pleased to announce the release v2.3.0 of ELEMENTS, an open-source based CFD software suite for vehicle design applications produced by Streamline Solutions. The product combines two simulation environments in one package: a dedicated wizard type interface for modelling external vehicle aerodynamics, and a general purpose CFD interface for solving other vehicle design applications (e.g. UHMT, HVAC, in-cabin flows, aeroacoustics, soiling, etc).

ELEMENTS v2.3.0 incorporates several new features, improvements and bug fixes with respect to the previous release v2.2.0. The software also includes a new version of the open-source CFD simulation engine HELYX-Core (v2.2-2.5) developed by ENGYS based on the OpenFOAM libraries.

The External Aerodynamics GUI in ELEMENTS v2.3.0 is now fully configurable, enabling users to create their own custom-made CFD methodologies to model external aerodynamics using any given wind tunnel configuration and vehicle shape. Users have complete control over the meshing and solver settings to define any set of best simulation practices in accordance with their own in-house CFD procedures. All custom-made configurations can be easily deployed across the entire organisation to ensure that every external aerodynamics CFD model is defined and solved consistently in ELEMENTS using a common automated simulation approach.

In order to be ready for the planned regulations on alternative drag prediction methods found in the proposed Worldwide harmonized Light vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP), the default DES simulation best practices for external aerodynamics delivered with ELEMENTS are continuously improved and validated to provide highly accurate Δ(CD×Af) predictions within ±0.015m2 of wind tunnel measurements.

Other enhancements delivered with this new version of ELEMENTS include, but are not limited to:

  • Up-to-date ELEMENTS-Adjoint add-on solver module, featuring improved solver robustness, additional adjoint turbulence models and new optimisation objectives.
  • Improved interfaces for defining wheels and porous media in the External Aerodynamics GUI.
  • Added support for dynamic mesh solvers, including 6DoF and dynamic mesh refinement.
  • Improved features for data visualisation and post-processing, including automatic report generation in Windows systems.
  • Up-to-date documentation, all accessible via the Help menu in the GUI, including new comprehensive guides for HELYX-Core and ELEMENTS-Adjoint.

The latest installation files for both Linux and Windows are now available for download to all ELEMENTS customers from our Customer Portal at http://clients.engys.com.
