ELEMENTS FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions about ELEMENTS.
Is ELEMENTS a GUI for OpenFOAM?
No. ELEMENTS is a general-purpose, enterprise-class CFD software solution created and supported by ENGYS consisting of two main software components:
- HELYX-GUI: our graphical user interface, released under our own end-user license agreement. HELYX-GUI is designed to control and operate HELYX-Core.
- HELYX-Core: our open-source CFD simulation engine, released under the GNU GPL. HELYX-Core has been actively developed by ENGYS since 2010 using well-known open-source libraries, such as OpenFOAM, VTK, etc.
Can ELEMENTS-GUI be used with standard OpenFOAM?
No. ELEMENTS-GUI only supports and works with the CFD utilities and solvers developed by ENGYS and delivered with HELYX-Core.
Which platforms does ELEMENTS support?
ELEMENTS run on both Linux and Windows systems, and support x86, ARM and PowerPC architectures.
Are HELYX and ELEMENTS open-source?
HELYX-Core (our simulation engine) is open source and released to our customers under the GNU GPL as part of our HELYX and ELEMENTS packages, offering unlimited meshing and solver scalability without additional license costs. Conversely, the graphical user interfaces delivered with HELYX and ELEMENTS are released under our own proprietary license and are not open source.
Can I download ELEMENTS for free?
No. ELEMENTS is only available to paying customers. Both HELYX and ELEMENTS are licensed on a per-user basis.
Can ELEMENTS be customised or extended?
Yes. ELEMENTS customers are given full access to the HELYX-Core source code under the GNU GPL to modify and extend all the original functionality provided by ENGYS. ENGYS also offers development services and APIs for integrating custom CFD applications or workflows.
How does HELYX differ from ELEMENTS?
While HELYX is a general-purpose CFD tool, ELEMENTS offers all the benefits of HELYX in addition to a series of vertical applications tailored for external vehicle aerodynamics, thermal analysis and other general vehicle flow design applications.
How does HELYX-Core differ from OpenFOAM?
HELYX-Core is an enterprise-focussed evolution of OpenFOAM, characterised by its novel Unified Solver Framework. Unlike the more rigid publicly available distributions, this architecture, underpinned by a new consolidated material properties backbone, allows users to define simulations with much greater freedom through a combination modular physical models.
This versatility is maximized by superior performance from advanced coupled solvers and code optimization. Supported by an evolved meshing engine that combines superior cell quality, performance, and robustness with an extended set of capabilities, HELYX-Core delivers the speed and numerical stability demanded by modern engineering.
